Pastor’s Bookshelf: Jehovah’s Witness

For this week, I thought it would be nice to share some research I had done for an inmate in the prison program I do at Tucker. He was curious about Jehovah’s Witnesses, as his grandmother occasionally took him to a Kingdom Hall growing up. He was interested about what they believed, and if they were considered a part of Christianity. For many reasons, I believe it’s important for Christians to understand other religions, from being able to communicate with evangelism to understanding what Christianity itself teaches.

Anyways, here’s a write-up I did for him based off several religious encyclopedias and reference books. Enjoy!


History and Organization

Jehovah’s Witness was a new religious movement created during the late 1800s. The history and evaluation of this movement is somewhat controversial, with many Christians alleging that Jehovah’s Witness is actually a cult, rather than an individual denomination of Christianity.

The religion was founded by a man named Charles Taze Russell in Pennsylvania in 1870. Russell had a background in the Presbyterian and a Congregationalist churches. He worked as a Christian minister and bible scholar in early adulthood, but soon began to reject many mainstream teachings of Christianity. He denied the immortality of the soul, the physical return of Christ, and the concept of the trinity. Russell formed what was known as the Watch Tower Society and began to extensively publish his thoughts. He firmly believed that Jesus was about to return back to earth any day, and that humans were living in the “last days.” His followers spread the message and planted congregations all across the world. Jehovah’s Witnesses have actually been persecuted in many tragic periods of history, including the Holocaust.

Eventually the Jehovah’s Witness moved their headquarters to New York and have roughly 8.5 million adherents worldwide today in about 120,000 congregations. Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Halls (local congregations) are led by about a dozen men with an acting president. Members are required to devote so many hours a month to evangelize by passing out Jehovah’s Witness printed material in public on street corners and throughout local neighborhoods.

Theology and Practice

As the name implies, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that God is known as Jehovah. They emphasize accepting Jehovah in order to survive the impending destruction of the world. They are what is known as an apocalyptic religion, believing that doom will befall earth in the very near future. They require adult baptism and argue that baptisms from all other denominations/religions are invalid and no good. Their faith is further exercised by distributing literature, notably The Watchtower and Awake! pamphlets and magazines door-to-door.

One of the most notable differences between Jehovah’s Witnesses and Christianity is their views on the trinity. They reject the belief that God is revealed in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as taught by scriptural tradition and the historical creeds of faith like the Apostles’ and Nicaean—and simply worship Jehovah alone. They focus more on Jehovah as God than they would Jesus. They do believe that God created Jesus, he existed on earth, and that he died for the world’s sins. Yet they are forbidden from worshipping Christ—only Jehovah is to be worshipped. Jesus is simply viewed as a king or ruler in Jehovah’s kingdom who will oversee rule in the future. This nontrinitarian belief is profoundly different from mainstream Christianity and church teaching from the past 2,000 years.

Jehovah’s Witnesses also have unique views about Satan. They believe that Satan arrived on earth on October 1, 1914. They believe that Satan currently controls all governments, and so likewise Jehovah’s Witnesses are taught to not participate in politics.

Regarding heaven and hell, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that only 144,000 people will make it to heaven. This is a strict interpretation of Revelation 14:1-5. These chosen people will rule in heaven as kings and priests alongside Jesus. They also believe other people outside the 144,000 will also experience life, too, but the others will live on earth outside of the heavenly realm after the earth has been purified.

Overall, a Jehovah’s Witness will argue that their expression of faith represents true Christianity, while all other Christians are condemned. God will allegedly destroy all other churches except for Kingdom Halls in the future.

Another noteworthy aspect about Jehovah’s Witnesses is their sense of separateness in the world. They do not celebrate birthdays or other holidays. They believe that Christmas and Easter have pagan purposes and are thereby sinful to acknowledge. They also refuse military service and do not salute or sing patriotic songs or pledges. In this theological view, the only allegiance they have is to Jehovah and Jehovah’s true church (the Jehovah’s Witnesses)

And medically speaking, Jehovah’s Witnesses are famously (or infamously) known for refusing blood transfusions, a common practice for replacing lost blood during surgery, trauma, or other medical issues. This is based on a strict interpretation of Acts 15:28-29 and other passages regarding the life-giving quality of blood. To accept the blood of someone else is to dishonor Jehovah’s will for one’s life.

This anti-blood transfusion practice is quite controversial, as adults may refuse to treat children with medical maladies. In many cases, this has resulted in lawsuits and cases of child abuse and neglect. Every couple of years, a Jehovah’s Witness child will die because his or her parents refused to seek medical treatment.

Summary

Because they reject several basic biblical teachings and Christian creeds, many Christians do not view Jehovah’s Witnesses as authentic Christians. For starters, they deny the divinity of Jesus Christ as Lord, and simply believe that he is a ruler-figure for a heavenly realm. For this reason, I personally do not view Jehovah’s Witnesses as a part of the Christian faith because they deny the worship of Jesus Christ—a central figure in Christianity. They might be best considered a fringe group or sect deviating from the mainstream Christian message practiced by Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Congregationalists, Presbyterians, Methodists, and so on.

Another criticism of Jehovah’s Witnesses is the strict teaching about how God will only save 144,000 people. I personally think this is an improper reading of Revelation, and that this number likely means a figure of speech dealing with the 12 tribes of Israel from before the time of Christ. Additionally, in Revelation 7:9, John speaks of seeing a great multitude no one could count of people in heaven worshipping God–surely more than a limit of 144,000.

One other critique of Jehovah’s Witnesses is that the church is often very strict and controlling. Similar to other faiths in recent years, there have been cases of coverups regarding child abuse with Kingdom Halls and the broader organization. Since 1950 in Australia alone, it is believed that over 1,000 cases of child abuse were not reported to law enforcement. Additionally, if someone disagrees with leaders, a Jehovah’s Witness may be shunned or abused by those religious leaders who hold a lot of power. The Watchtower organization is quite powerful and wealthy, with annual revenue of nearly $1 billion, ranking it as one of the richest corporations in New York. Some studies also indicate that they only spend about 10% for ministry, which raises the question of whether the religious leaders are simply getting rich off of managing a religion.

Other controversies include their translation of the bible—the New World Translation—which many non-Jehovah’s Witness bible scholars do not believe is accurate to ancient bible manuscripts. Jehovah’s Witnesses have also been known for making bold predictions and prophecies about the future, many of which were unfulfilled. For instance, the world was allegedly to end in the years 1914, 1925, and 1975.

But in the same breath, however, it is important to note the bits of truth I see in this particular religion. Devotion and evangelism are noteworthy strong points of this faith. Many Christians might be able to learn a thing or two by seeing how devoted a Jehovah’s Witness is willing to go door-to-door and share about their religious views. The average American Christian is usually timid about his or her faith, shying away from sharing it with others.

I also believe that Jehovah’s Witnesses are also onto something regarding public life and faith. I believe that Christians too often idolize political institutions, putting more hope in the military, a president, or political party than God himself. Jehovah’s Witnesses “get it right” in this regard—our only allegiance ought to be God’s kingdom, rather than the Republicans, Democrats, or Independents.

Facts on Crucifixion

One of my mentor pastors during seminary once offered up this insightful reflection on the Christian faith: “We always want the happiness of Easter morning… but in reality, we still have to go through Good Friday in order to get there.”

This reflection is true on so many levels. We yearn for God’s restoration and healing, yet don’t always allow God to work in-the-moment during times of pain and suffering–our personal “Good Fridays” so to speak. And this is also the case for how we envision faith itself. Protestant Christians are often tempted to just focus on the empty tomb, rather than Jesus hanging on the cross. We fail to reckon with the reality of suffering simply because it is uncomfortable for us to think about pain!

As I mentioned on Sunday, crucifixion is an utterly horrendous way to die. People throughout history have thought of new and cruel ways to harm and kill one another. Dying on a cross is a prime example of human depravity and state-sponsored violence.

Likewise, it is worth considering some of the details about crucifixion in order to fully realize what Jesus himself went through:

  • A cross could weigh 100-300 pounds. The condemned criminal would often be forced to carry it after being beaten to the crucifixion site. We find this to be the case for Jesus’ story.
  • Death was a slow, painful, and humiliating death. It took hours and even days to die. Crucified people were often stripped naked as a further act to humiliate them in front of the public.
  • Roman soldiers would often use a spear to further inflict pain on victims. Some accounts and descriptions of crucifixion during this era involve sexual assault, too.
  • Soldiers would also frequently break someone’s legs before crucifying, so they would be unable to support oneself properly while hanging on the cross or pole.
  • The exact cause of death during crucifixion is often varied. Sometimes a person’s heart would fail. Other times their body would gradually shut down and they would either suffocate or have a pulmonary embolism. Another cause of death was sepsis or an infection–keep in mind that death was a slow process, so many times an infection would finally kill someone.
  • Crucifixion was often a public occurrence to dissuade people from committing certain crimes agains the Roman Empire. Jesus’ crucifixion was arguably an effort to warn people against religious blasphemy or hanging out with the wrong kinds of people and promoting peace.
  • Cicero, a Roman lawmaker, has this insightful quote on crucifixion: “The very mention of the cross should be far removed not only from a Roman citizen’s body, but from his mind, his eyes, his ears.” Crucifixion was an abomination reserved for non-Romans. Many preferred to not even think about this act!

I share these facts about crucifixion not to be gruesome. Instead, reflecting on this topic can help us truly grasp what Jesus went through on Good Friday.

Yes, our faith is an exercise of hope and we have confidence in the empty tomb on Easter morning… but knowing what Jesus went through makes it all the more incredible. God took the worst this world had to offer and made something beautiful out of it.

God’s Empathy

All throughout scripture we find that one of God’s characteristics is empathy. God is eager to show compassion and care to those who are in need. Consider just a few of the following examples:

  • Exodus 3 is the story of God calling Moses. Perhaps the most miraculous thing about this passage–even more wonderful than a talking burning bush!–is that God heard the cry of an enslaved, oppressed people. Likewise, God sought to deliver the Israelites to freedom.
  • John 11:1-44 is the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Even before this resurrection miracle, Jesus took time to grieve.
  • Luke 19:37-42 speaks of Jesus weeping over Jerusalem, clearly an indication that his heart broke for the people there.
  • Paul describes God as the “God of all comfort” in 2 Corinthians 1:3-7. God comforts people in their troubles. Part of God’s salvation also includes having this perfect friend in Christ, who knows our every weakness and concern.
  • And of course, Paul guides the New Testament church to show empathy because God shows this character quality (Romans 12:15, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23Ephesians 4:29-32)

During my college years at Baylor, I studied philosophy for my bachelor’s degree. One author I read for a few classes was a guy named Nicholas Wolterstorff. He was fairly popular in the world of Christian analytical philosophy and had written extensively on theology and ethics. He taught for many years at Yale University and Calvin College.

Wolterstorff’s thought was especially impactful on my own academic journey because of his personal background, too. I had the chance to hear him speak a few times as a guest lecturer, and I was struck by how kind, compassionate, and empathetic he was. You could definitely tell his life had been touched by God in how he spoke about justice, loving vulnerable neighbors, and caring for those in need.

Many years ago one of his sons died in a mountain climbing accident while vacationing in Europe. This tragic loss undoubtedly shaped his views on God, suffering, and the human condition. Here are a couple quotes from his own journey of discovering God’s life-giving empathy and compassion…

God is love. That is why he suffers. To love our sinful world is to suffer. God so suffered for the world that he gave up his only Son to suffering. The one who does not see God’s suffering does not see his love. God is suffering love. So suffering is down at the center of things, deep down where the meaning is. Suffering is the meaning of our world. For love is the meaning. And love suffers. The tears of God are the meaning of history. Instead of explaining our suffering, God shares it.

We often have an idealized view of the word love. We assume it means nothing but happiness and bliss. Yes, these things ought to be a part of a loving relationship, but love often develops during moments of pain and challenge. Even though we do not enjoy it, suffering can actually build up our loving character with someone. The same was the case for God in the life of Jesus. Going to the cross was definitely not easy, yet God knew that it would be worth it in the end.

One of my favorite books Dr. Wolterstorff wrote was called Lament for a Son, which consisted of journal entries as he processed grief after his son’s death. Here’s one entry that has really shaped my sense of pastoral ministry:

How is faith to endure, O God, when you allow all this scraping and tearing on us? You have allowed rivers of blood to flow, mountains of suffering to pile up, sobs to become humanity’s song–all without lifting a finger that we could see. You have allowed bonds of love beyond number to be painfully snapped. If you have not abandoned us, explain yourself.

We strain to hear. But instead of hearing an answer we catch sight of God himself scraped and torn. Through our tears we see the tears of God.

As I noted in my preaching yesterday, Christ empathizes with you. He walked a lonely road during his final hours and ultimately lost his life for our sake. Jesus knows pain, suffering, anxiety, and worry.

Even though we may suffer, there is still life-changing hope. Through our tears, pain, and suffering, we begin to see that God himself suffered too on the cross. So God knows exactly what you might be going through right now, and will be there every step of the way.
